Interns
 

Internships will be offered assisting residents and fellows with projects and assisting Eyebeam staff with project-based and ongoing needs. Please email your letter of interest and resume with “Internship” in the heading to the address provided. In your letter of interest please indicate the time frame for which you are available as well as the internship for which you are applying or generally, what type of internship you will be looking for. Skills and requirements for internships vary.

Eyebeam Internship Requirements

Minimum of 15 hours per week, ideally 2-3 full days.

Ability to think creatively, work independently, handle many projects simultaneously, set priorities, follow through, and meet deadlines. Strong writing and research skills, including ability to gather information from the Foundation Center, Lexis-Nexis, Internet, and various types of search engines and research resources. Interest in contemporary art, or issues pertaining to art and technology a plus. We wish it weren't so, but internships are UNPAID. We will, however, work with educational institutions to provide academic credit for your work; graduate students are encouraged to apply.

 


Staff Internships

 

PR Assistant

Eyebeam is currently accepting applications for a Public Relations Assistant. This is a non-paid, part-time position/internship for a minimum of three months. The intern will be responsible for compiling and maintaining digital and hard copies of Eyebeam press and publicity materials; creating specialized press kits and developing customized publicity packages; researching media outlets and maintaining detailed files on local and national press contacts and assisting with Eyebeam guests and visitors. We will also work with the assistant to identify projects based on their individual areas of interest.

We are looking for a very thorough, detail-oriented, methodical, motivated and creative individual with an interest in the arts, new technology, media studies or communications. Applicants should feel comfortable working with Photoshop, databases and conducting online research.

Gadget Guru

Eyebeam's Technology Department seeks assistance with the cataloging, tracking, and general organization of its large equipment inventory. Major gadget-heads will enjoy this chance to play with some of the newest high tech toys. Neat freaks will appreciate this opportunity to perfect the organization and record keeping systems in place to keep track of Eyebeam's gear. Regular tasks will include data entry, online research of equipment (including potential new purchases), and organization of the equipment storage areas. Qualified candidates will be familiar with a variety of technological equipment and comfortable working on Apple computers. Familiarity with database systems and use of wikis is a plus, but we're most interested in finding someone eager to learn within our creative and high tech community.

Electronics, Physical Computing Intern for Elmo TMX Army

Eyebeam resident Adrianne Wortzel (July – December 2008) seeks a physical computing intern for a project to create an army of synched Elmo TMXs. Applicant should be adept at building and altering devices via Arduino and Xbee. This project is in early progress. Our small team has already gained control over its arm and we are in the stage of tying to make one Elmo arm communicate with another.

Device Expert

Resident Andrea Polli seeks an intern with experience designing and coding for mobile devices for information visualization. Python and GPS skills are desired. This is an opportunity to be a part of a team developing a project from the ground up. You will work primarily with Eyebeam resident artist Andrea Polli. Documentation Assistant

Eyebeam resident Christina Kral is looking for an assistant with experience and interest in video and photo documentation. You’ll be working with her following a group of students in residents on field trips and video-based experiments to capture the artistic process. An independent working attitude is welcome. Embedded Hacker Intern

Eyebeam Resident Hans-Christoph Steiner is looking for an intern to help develop projects for reusing embedded devices such as wifi routers, PDAs, iPods, etc. The intern will be expected to share the work, from the brainstorming and development of ideas to drudgery of making websites. Regular tasks include: getting GNU/Linux running on devices, programming the next killer app using Pd and/or Python, building custom circuits for these devices, documenting the whole process with writing, photos, and video, and creating HOWTO webpages for people to do it themselves. I will do my best to make sure everyday you do something interesting and I expect you to do your best to commit to a certain amount of time each week and stick with it.

Materials Research and Development Inter For “An Archipelago of Altered States”

Resident Adrianne Wortzel is looking for a materials engineer or student of architecture as a research intern for tracking down and procuring the use of new versatile, hybrid and reactive materials for the construction of sentient objects for her upcoming project “An Archipelago of Altered States”: a cluster of distributed sentient objects sensitive to both environmental and human interaction, containing embedded moving images where the interactivity changes the narrative of the video.

Intern's duties will include assigned research and follow up with industries, architects, materials engineers and other projects with new materials, creating a research archive, making contact and acting as liaison between sources and artist.

Telecommunications Intern for “An Archipelago of Altered States”

Experience and deep interest in wireless communications in any application is required. Web Design and Development Interns

We are looking for several web design and development interns who have experience ranging from CSS to PHP coding. We will be working as a group to help give you the skillz that are relevant so you can help make the great projects that come out of our labs. We will be focusing a fair amount on Wordpress and Drupal (administering, themeing, customizing and building modules) in order to create sites that document projects fluidly, as well as help build online communities around several of Eyebeam's initiatives. You will be working primarily with Jeff Crouse, Steve Lambert, Michael Mandiberg, Addie Wagenknecht, Jessica Banks, and Zach Lieberman. Help build the Bartender of the Future

Eyebeam fellows David Jimison and Jeff Crouse seek an intern to help with the construction of BoozBot 1.0, a bar tending robot. Furniture Building

R&D OpenLab fellow Jessica Banks is looking for an intern to assist with creating hybrid/robotic furniture, which will involve both building and electronics. The ideal candidate will have fabrication skills (e.g., woodworking, machining, prototyping). An understanding of production materials and a mechanical engineering or a design background wouldn't hurt. Chainsaw sculpture experience and/or casting know-how would make you a shoe-in (which is really "shoehorn" but it sounds wrong). We would collaborate on design, manufacture and control. Eyebeam's female fellows are seeking an intern, aka ninja, (preferably female) who has a background in backend web development (html, php, flash and sql database building- a big plus) to help set up a social networking site and application tracking menstrual cycles in the US. R&D OpenLab fellow Jessica Banks is looking for an intern who can realistically render (Rhino, 3D Studio Max, etc.) mechanical CAD models and hand drawings of interior design projects such as robotic/reconfigurable furniture and architectures. Eyebeam R&D OpenLab fellow Jessica Banks needs help building a website. This involves both designing the look of and user interaction with a site that documents collaborative kinetic furniture projects. Barring that ability, lapidary competence in web development, information architecture and visualization would suffice. Or just have a really hip aesthetic sense and Photoshop, CSS, Dreamweaver proficiency. OpenFrameworks Intern

R&D OpenLab fellow Zach Lieberman seeks an intern/ninja-in-training to help with developing OpenFrameworks, a cross platform C++ library for creative coding. There is a possibility of pay for this position. The candidate should have an interest in coding and/or experimenting with computer vision, sound synthesis, animation, audio-visual expression, and interactivity. We will operate at a meta level, building toolkits that help people make expressive works, so a curiosity to build, experiment, and tinker with performance and installation-based projects is crucial. Modular Electronics Project

R&D OpenLab fellow Ayah Bdeir is looking for an intern with strong skills in electronic circuits design to help develop new modules in the littleBits project (www.ayahbdeir.com/littleBits). Applicant must be very proficient in electronics design and prototyping and eagle layout editor. You will get to help come up with new crazy ideas for tiny little modules like sequence recorders, touch screen adapters and radio modules, and make them accessible to designers and artists. Paid Assistant/Internship

Eyebeam senior fellow Steve Lambert is hiring a paid assistant/intern for this summer. Hours are 2 days per week, 4-5 hours per day. Duties range from updating websites, drafting email communication, preparing archived work for exhibitions, ordering supplies and materials, printing and scanning documents and photos, drawing mockups of work, to errand running, paying bills, etc.


Skills desired: familiarity with wordpress, photo editing, and prepping files for the web. Ability to burn dvds, video editing experience a plus. Good communication, writing, and editing skills. Google skills: thorough research skills. Experience with illustrator or vector editing software helpful. Must be dependable, trustworthy, and able to work autonomously.
The person who fills this position will work more closely with me than a general intern might. There is a tremendous opportunity to learn. Recent graduates and MFA students are encouraged to apply.
