Blip Festival

Eyebeam is excited to host this four-day music and multimedia event, featuring 40 musicians and visualists from around the world. Workshops and concerts will focus on the artistic exploration of primitive video games, home computer technology, and will showcase a fascinating cross-section of the chiptune musical aesthetic and related low-bit visual art.

Holiday Hackshop
December 1, 1 – 6PM
Workshops from $5 – 25 for materials.
Events are free. No sign-up required.
Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, Eyebeam will transform into a high-tech version of the North Pole, with a day of artist-led workshops and DIY activities for people of all ages. The fourth annual Holiday Hackshop will feature toy hacking, heirloom vegetable planting and seed preservation; workshops about alternative energy generation; plus a few of the old favorites.

Workshop Schedule:
Title: “Automata”
Artist: Mouna Andraos
Materials: $10
Times: 1.30PM, 4PM
Length: 2 hours
Sign up: 10 people per workshop (open to all ages, recommended that those eight years and younger are accompanied by an adult).
Task: Create a small physical animation, powered by a hand crank—a riff off traditional automata making, but with cardboard, as opposed to wood.
Title: “Heirloom seed planting and packaging”
Artist: Leah Gauthier
Materials: $5
Times: 1PM, 2PM, 3PM, 4PM, 5PM
Length: 30 minutes
Sign up: Five people per session (open to all ages).
Task: Design, hand decorate, and fill packets with of heirloom seeds for distribution far and wide. The group will also learn to plant seeds and think of different urban environments (such as pots on sunny fire escapes!) to plant.
Title: “LED Popsicle Stick Photo Frames”
Artist: Randy Sarafan
Materials: $10
Times: 1.30PM, 4PM
Length: 2 hours
Sign up: 12 people (open to all ages, but children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult).
Task: Create a truly special photo frame for you and/or your loved ones, with this brighter twist on the popsicle stick frame.
Title: “Make Your Own Wearable Photoshop Clothing”

Materials: $20
Times: 1.30PM, 4PM
Length: 2 hours
Sign up: Eight people (open to all ages, but children under eight years, must be accompanied by an adult).
Task: Eyebeam's new large-format printer is primed and ready for you to create your own fun-infused fashion. You will be provided with ready-made templates, but the rest is up to you. Gather images from the net, take pictures with our digital cameras, and put it all together in Photoshop to create a design. Creative support will be in abundance to help with ideas, such as mapping Youtube stills onto a jacket, or your favorite chair onto a pair of pants. Printing will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes once the design is done.
Title: “Forays Into the Future: Snow globes”

Times: 1.30PM, 4PM
Length: 2 hours
Sign up: 10 people (open to all ages, but children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult).
Task: We know the future aims to be green, but please join Forays to reproduce the present inside a snowdome. Create a polluted city, an island of multi-color trash, melting polar scenes, or the remains of your imaginary city. Participants can laser-cut ready-made files of cities, trees and other images, and then hack $2 bicycle safety lights to add spotlighting to the bleakness contained within the domes.

Task: Tired of all those LCD TVs everywhere? Want a break from advertisements while you're trying to eat? Want to zap screens from across the street? Then TV-B-Gone is what you need! This ultra high-powered version of the popular TV-B-Gone is fun to make and even more fun to use. Just point and click to turn any TV off!

Beyond Light Bulbs
December 13, 2007 – April 19, 2008
A series based on the conversations and findings of the Eyebeam Sustainability Research Group. One part exhibition for showcasing ideas, one part forum for engaging and discussing the current state of sustainable and green concepts, and one part headquarters for taking the next step after changing our light bulbs.
Featured in this series is the performance echo::system—The Desert, Eco-Vis Challenge, and the exhibition Feedback.

Eco-Vis Challenge
December 13 – 15: Eco Icons on display.
December 15, 6 – 8PM: Reception and winners announced.
Not only is there an environmental crisis, but an environmental data crisis. Eyebeam invites artists to collaborate with technologists to redefine what the future of tracking and visualizing the environment could be.
Winning designs will be awarded cash prizes and, along with finalists, be included in the upcoming exhibition: Feedback at Eyebeam.

Free Media Workshop
February 16, 1PM. Free.
Eyebeam Production Fellows and student residents with MediaShed will teach you how to recycle media and technology garbage into useful electronics, and share your creations on the Gearbox toolkit website.
