Gerdes' work has been included in film festivals and exhibitions internationally, including the Guangzhou Triennia, Kiasma Musuem of Modern Art (Helsinki), the Kunsthalle Exnergasse (Vienna), Luleå Biennial (Sweden), Migrating Forms Festival, Moscow International Film Festival, New York Underground Film Festival, Yerba Buena Center (San Francisco, CA), as well as in a number of alternative art spaces in New York City: Art in General, Artists' Space, PS122, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School University. His writing has appeared in Rethinking Marxism, October, and the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. He is the recipient of numerous residencies, including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) Woolworth Building Workspace Residency and the LMCC Swing Space Residency, and recent grants from the Jerome Foundation, NYSCA, and the Experimental Television Center. He has taught and lectured in numerous institutions and public contexts, including as Visiting Artist in the Department of Cinema, State University of New York at Binghamton. He teaches video at The Cooper Union School of Art.
