Dedicated to outfitting graffiti artists with open source technologies for urban communication. The GRL was formed in the Eyebeam R&D Open Lab in 2006.
The Mobile Broadcast Unit with L.A.S.E.R Tag System (LTS) is the latest Open Source, Weapon of Mass Defacement developed by the Graffiti Research Lab in the Eyebeam R&D OpenLab. NYC! This tactical tool allows any citizen, graff writer, artist or protester to use a projector, camera and laser to write, in real-time, on large-scale surfaces and structures from a distance of 100's of meters away. Citizens can post their art, messages and propaganda on a scale previously monopolized by advertisers, governments, major media, and other cultural tyrants. The BMU + LTS is self-contained and mobile, mounted on a giant trike. This unit has its own power supply, custom armatures and a 1200 watt audio system.
GRL: The Complete First Season is this Sunday, May 4th @ 8PM at the MoMA. After the flick, talk with artists featured in the film, including Mark Jenkins, Leon Reid, Steve Lambert, the GRL and special guests + party to the music of Javelin. BYOPS! (Bring your own purple stuff).

Be it through projection, writing on walls or robotic pamphleteering, Open City presents the work of artists who communicate through the surfaces and structures of our communal spaces and offers a deeper look at the means and motivations of urban action and creativity. Join participating artists for the Opening Reception March 1, 6-8pm to launch this series of screenings, presentations and workshops exploring tool building, tactics, techniques and approaches to communication by any means necessary within the urban context.
