Their mission is to study the forces and structures which affect self-determination and to provide technologies which extend the autonomy of human activists.

Terminal Air

Terminal Air is a project that explores complex interconnections between government agencies and private contractors involved with the United States Central Intelligence Agency's extraordinary rendition program. Since the mid-90’s, the CIA has operated the extraordinary rendition program, in which suspected terrorists captured in Western nations are transported to secret locations for torture and interrogation. A thoroughly modern enterprise, the extraordinary rendition program is largely carried out using leased equipment and private contractors. These private charter planes often use civilian airports for refueling, making their movements subject to public record and visible to anyone who knows which tail numbers to look for. However, while these missions are carried out under the guise of protecting the American people, the nature of the program has thus far remained out of reach to both American and International law.

Eyebeam alum in Greater NY - Opening at PS1, Sunday May 23

An Atlas of Radical Cartography will be included in this year's Greater New York exhibition at PS1. An Atlas, a collection of 10 maps and 10 essays, is edited by Lize Mogel and Alexis Bhagat and includes maps by Eyebeam alums Trevor Paglen and Brooke Singer as well as the collective Institute for Applied Autonomy. The Opening Day Celebration for Greater New York is Sunday, May 23 from 12-6PM. Greater New York, the third iteration of the quinquennial exhibition organized by MoMA PS1 and MOMA, showcasing some 68 artists, including former Eyebeam resident Rashaad Newsome, and collectives living and working in the metropolitan New York area, will open at MoMA PS1 on May 23 and run through October 18, 2010.

We Love New York

This Celebration of New York City engaged in theory and practice about civil liberties and public space. Eyebeam sponsored an exhibition and a series of workshops that were free to the public. Visitors and participants learned about surveillance technology, the open wireless movement, tactical media and GIS mapping techniques. On View: An 80-foot long day-glow map of Manhattan by Sumant Jayakrishnan, a luminous 3D model of the skyline by John Klima, computer kiosks with interactive mapping tools by Community Cartography, the City of Memory project by Jake Barton, and a wall of GIS maps illustrating social and economic trends by C-Map and others. Public Programs: Workshops on surveillance, wireless, urban geography, and tactical media led by the Institute for Applied Autonomy, the Surveillance Camera Players, NYPIRG's Community Mapping Assistance Project, Matt Jones (the inventor of "warchalking"), NYC Wireless, Critical Art Ensemble, Beatriz da Costa, and others.
