The symbiosis between art and science is a primary element of Kazuhiko Hachiya’s work. Visual and tactile experiences are sources of inspiration. He obtained his degree at the Kyushu Institute of Design, Japan (1989). In 1995 he won the Japan Art Scholarship’s Grand Prix. A year later he created PostPet a small digital creature that lives in the computer, despatching and delivering electronic mail. In addition to these functions, PostPet is programmed to interact with the user. This work won a prize in the Net category at the Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria (1998).
In his outstanding interactive installation Inter Discommunication Machine (1993), each of two visitors wears a visor transmitting a real-time image of the other person’s visual field. The work thus questions vision and our individual perception of the world. It was part of the ARTEC Nagoya Biennial (1995), Japan, and won prizes at ARTEC 95, Nagoyia, Japan, and in the interactive art category of Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria (1996).In the installation AirBoard (2001)—a reference to the film Back to the Future 2—Hachiya offered visitors a real interactive experience. He developed a carbon and aluminium body capable of lifting one or two individuals off the ground. Hachiya took part in the Fukui Biennale: Media and Body, Fukui, Japan (1997), and in 2000 milk: Experiment for Aichi-EXPO 2005, Aoyama, Tokyo.
