Yael Kanarek founded the international culture and technology network The Upgrade! in 1999, together with a group of NYC-based new media artists and curators including Tim Whidden, Mark River and Mark Napier. She joined Eyebeam as a Teaching Artist in 1999 – 2000, and in 2001 was among the inaugural Artists in Residence housed at Eyebeam’s Chelsea facility.

Yael has been developing World of Awe, a series of projects united by a shared narrative of a traveler searching for lost treasure in a parallel world, since 1995. Yael continues to develop components of World of Awe, which extend across media including net art, photography, sculpture, writing, music and dance.

Kanarek is represented by bitforms gallery in New York and Nelly Aman in Tel Aviv.
