Google-themed sari at Delhi mall
Shared by eyebeam
The psychogeographer Liz Kueneke uses Google satellite maps as the basis for hand-embroidering neighborhoods in cities such as NYC, LA, Barcelona and Bangalore. She then installs the maps in contentious public spaces and invites residents to sew their associations and memories into the fabric.

Liz and I have been collaborating on a fabric map of Bushwick, Brooklyn and asking residents to embroider places they think are threatened by gentrification, violence or a lack of resources and what places are important for preserving the identity of the neighborhood. Like the Google Sari, the textile maps are a kind of digital handicraft that allows for tactile and communal interactions with images we usually only get to experience two-dimensionally and without the ability to manually craft. The participatory mapping process takes the shape of a sewing circle that makes the virtual material, and possibly wearable.
Sari for Search Engines

Spotted in a shopping mall in Guragon, India (a planetary tech hub) - a Google-themed print sari!
This sartorial search engine is a mash-up of content from the new tech economy and form from a local tradition. The outfit also materializes the virtual economy that is powering the rise of the new mall and new fashions.
