Drawing Contemporaries

Opening reception: Thurs., May 21, 6PM – 8PM

Drawing Contemporaries, curated by Eyebeam senior fellow Michael Mandiberg, is an exhibition of works on paper made by a peer group of new media artists who all make drawings, either as a primary object, or as an experimental step in their process. The artists often use computers or algorithms as a logic structure or drawing aid in a way that is foregrounded in these works. Many of these artists are Eyebeam affiliated, but all are contemporaries whose influences upon each other can be traced in this exhibition.

Darren Kraft uses powdered graphite to photorealistically reproduce icons and logos associated with consumer and political culture; Eyebeam senior fellow Steve Lambert and Julia Schwadron write personal and poetic messages of hope which they leave taped up in public places; Michael Mandiberg uses the laser cutter to etch and carve works on paper that incorporate text, history and design; Marisa Olson performs Google image searches for obsolete technologies, and traces their contours directly off her laptop screen with a mechanical pencil; and Lee Walton creates elaborate indexes of possible graphic marks which are algorithmically used to document events as they occur. His subjects range from from pedestrian traffic to sports games.

In my other life, I am a teacher at Hunter College.  For the past 2 semesters I have been teaching a class called Tools & Techniques in the IMA program in the Film & Media department.  This semester, as my students’ final project, they have made a series of videos that we will be showing at Monkeytown on the 19th of this month.  I’ve been watching these films evolve and they look great, so I’m sure it will be a good time.

YouTube War is an augmented reality card game that is played in front of a live audience. Before each game, in an offstage bullpen, two players select five videos that make up their hand. They are each given a special visor and 5 cards. Each card is printed with a special marker on the front that can be detected by the webcam mounted on the table. The players take their seats at the ‘Tubing table and and look into their private monitor, where they see their 5 videos playing on their cards.

After a countdown, both players put a card into the “ring” – in front of the main camera. In a large projection behind the players, the videos plays on the cards as if they were attached.  Player B then chooses and throws down one of his cards, which also plays in the large projection. At that point, there is a 10 second pause as the audience members cast their vote by using lasers to point at a target. Hitting the target makes a meter fill up. The player whose meter fills up first wins the round.

During the game, commentators provide a running commentary on the game much like durring a football or World Series of Poker game. Hopefully we will have time to integrate some cool motion graphics stuff to present stats, biographical info, etc.

We will set up a tournament tree at the beginning of the evening and play through untill we find a winner.

On 11 November 2008, a fourteen-page special edition of the New York Times mysteriously appeared on the streets of New York. Its headline, “Iraq War Ends,” introduced a collection of articles under the rubric of “All the News We Hope to Print,” an alteration of the paper of record’s actual motto, “All the News That’s Fit to Print.” Among the many organizers of the special edition spoof was Steve Lambert, who sat down with Fillip to discuss the project.

Upgrade! New York celebrates its 10th anniversary with a reception, video screening, and presentations by Upgrade alumni.

After a humble beginning in a New York bar in 1999, the Upgrade! has blossomed into an international network with over thirty nodes meeting regularly all across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. To celebrate ten years of dialog and debate on issues related to art and technology, Eyebeam and Not An Alternative will host an evening of presentations by Upgrade! alumni Alexander Galloway, Mushon Zer-Aviv, and Savi_ Ra_ovi_, and a video screening of work produced by artists from the Upgrade! International network. A reception will follow.

Alexander Galloway and Mushon Zer-Aviv will present their collaborative project, Kriegspiel, a computer game based on Guy Debord’s Game of War. Inspired by the military theory of Carl von Clausewitz and the European campaigns of Napoleon, Debord’s game is a chess-variant played by two opposing players on a game board of 500 squares arranged in rows of 20 by 25 squares. Galloway and Zer-Aviv will also discuss their plans to make the game open source.

Savi_ Ra_ovi_, a regular contributor to Upgrade! Boston, will present his work done in collaboration with Catherine D’Ignazio. Ra_ovi_ and D’Ignazio run iKatun, an organization that engages public participation in transforming the meaning and use of public space.

The presentations will be preceded by a 30-minute screening of video work from members of the Upgrade! International network.

About the Presenters
Alexander R. Galloway is an author and programmer. He is a founding member of the software collective RSG and creator of the Carnivore and Kriegspiel projects. The New York Times recently described his work as “conceptually sharp, visually compelling and completely attuned to the political moment.” Galloway is the author of Protocol: How Control Exists After Decentralization (MIT, 2004), Gaming: Essays on Algorithmic Culture (Minnesota, 2006), and a new book cowritten with Eugene Thacker called The Exploit: A Theory of Networks (Minnesota, 2007). He teaches at New York University.

Mushon Zer-Aviv is a designer, an educator and a media activist from Tel-Aviv, based in NY. His work explores media in public space and the public space in media. In his creative research he focuses on the perception of territory and borders and the way they are shaped through politics, culture, networks and the World Wide Web. He is the co-founder of ShiftSpace.org - an open source layer above any website; Shual.com - a foxy design studio; YouAreNotHere.org - a dislocative tourism agency; Kriegspiel; and the Tel Aviv node of the Upgrade international network. Mushon is an honorary resident at Eyebeam - an art and technology center in New York. He teaches new media research at NYU and open source design at Parsons the New School of Design.

Savi_ Ra_ovi_ (Sasha or Pirun) was born in Titograd, Yugoslavia (now Podgorica, Montenegro) and lives and works in Cambridge, MA. Ra_ovi_ is an entrepreneur, new media artist, curator, publisher, designer, programmer, political activist, and performer. He is the co-founder with Catherine D’Ignazio of iKatun, an artist-run organization whose mission is to foster public engagement in the politics of information and a member of the Institute for Infinitely Small Things troupe that uses research and performance to investigate social and political everyday “tiny things” in order to transform public spaces dominated by corporate and political agendas.
