Ticket Machine by Kaho Abe

A ticket for a trip is an object that gives you exclusive access to an unexplored place.  It is a mere piece of paper, but it carries imagination and anticipation of the future, of what new world it can unlock. The Ticket Machine is a Rube Goldberg type collaborative installation which is triggered with a drop of a coin. The machine then unveils different worlds, created by the collaborators, and finally produces a printed ticket. This installation was created during the Eyebeam Roadshow 2010 at 01SJ in San Jose.

The first device, activating a shattered LCD panel was created by Randy Sarafan and the remaining two devices were created by myself with the help of Ez Cothran.

Mary Mack 5000 Intro Movie

What is Mary Mack 5000? These days, most games are played on computers and consoles, often alone or with people online. Mary Mack 5000 is a game designed to encourage face to face interaction between the players, and also amongst the spectators. With the use of gloves with conductive sensors, the Arduino, Flash, laptop and projector, we hope that people will be able to enjoy themselves both by playing as well as by watching the game.

We have repackaged what is a little girl's game that challenges rhythm, speed and timing, as a hyper, metal-rocker game. No, it is not just your little sister's game anymore.

Teta Haniya's secrets

in collaboration with Luma Eldin
supported by Eyebeam Art and Technology center
2008
Series of 5
Electronics, hacked toys, Victoria's Secret underwear, magnets

After decades of running her kinky Syrian lingerie store in the Hamidiya souk of Damascus, Teta Haniya comes to America bearing gifts. With over 60 years of Islamic teachings on seduction, and an arsenal of kitschy electronics, Teta Haniya hijacks the western panty, triggering the sexual liberation of the American woman.

Teta Haniya's Secrets is a line of electronic lingerie inspired by a Syrian tradition of hacking electronic toys, integrating them into panties, and selling them in the most casual of fashions at popular ‘Damascan’ souks. The line consists of five Victoria’s Secret panties hacked Syrian-style according to literal interpretations of Arabic expressions of seduction. The biggest lingerie store in the United States isn’t so liberal after all…

Souk el Hamidieh
Damascus, Syria
December 2007

In Damascus’ Souk el Hamidieh, amidst stands selling oriental carpets, and middle eastern scents, lies one of the most shocking and best kept Syrian secrets. In the most casual of ways, little boutiques sell kinky, colorful, electronic lingerie to conservative looking women of all ages, embodying the essence of Syrian playful sexuality.
