NEW WORK: Eternal Portraits

Facebook uses face recognition software to identify its users in photos. This works via a ‘template’ of your facial features that is created from your profile images. These features — the distance between your eyes, the symmetry of your mouth — generally do not change over time. Unlike a photograph, which captures some ephemeral expression of who you are at a particular moment, a face recognition template forever remains your portrait.

The Internets is all buzzing with chatter against Facebook’s latest privacy breaches. Into this happy mix a bunch of NYU students have been cast as the Davids against the social networking Goliath. Is that really a good thing? Can we help?

Friends are there... or are they?

Diaspora is a new initiative by 4 NYU students to create a “privacy aware, personally controlled, do-it-all distributed open source social network” by the end of the summer. A worthy mission indeed with quite an ambitious time line.

Ignoring my grandma… friending my enemies… WTF? Is it even reasonable to expect social media to reflect the depth our social life? And when it fails, what do we stand to lose? (+ tips & hacks)

Facebook, in a rare instance of honesty

We’ve often thought to ourselves, “If only there was a website that analyzed my facebook events and told me in advance whether I’d be attending a sausage party.”

facebook invite everybody

Sick an tired of clicking several hundred times when you want to invite your friends to a Facebook event? Yeah, me too. So I wrote a Greasemonkey script that does it for you. And just to be thorough, I wrote a bookmarklet too (for you non-GM people.)

It is all up at http://TheRedProject.com/scripts along with some other simple utility scripts I wrote, on the newly cleaned up front end to TheRedProject.com, which is my utility & storage domain.

I know, I should write these more often, so there is less to digest in each one. Much activity of late:

1. Permanent State of Emergency

2. New Videos

3. Shows and talks

4. OMG I’m Twittering: http://twitter.com/mandiberg

5. Histoires à l’ère numérique
