NYC public school students between the ages of 13–18 are invited to spend one afternoon a week at Eyebeam. Each month features a different theme, and includes related hands-on workshops led by experienced artists and technologists, and focuses on developing creative skills essential for aspiring young artists.

RGBDToolkit

The RGBDToolkit is an open source platform for volumetric filmmaking that utilizes a hacked Kinect depth sensor paired with a DSLR video camera to creates a unique hybrid form of three dimensional video. The toolkit allows experimentation with a new paradigm of filmmaking where 3D models derived from large image datasets allow for choosing perspectives after the fact, merging photography and 3D animation. The RGB+D tumblr (http://rgbd.tumblr.com) showcases on going research from the artists developing the software while they create their work.

Urban Ontology: Rethinking Urban Design

A small crowd assembles in Eyebeam’s mainspace. Rows of red, metal chairs have been hastily arranged facing an elevated stage upon which perches a pair of welcoming armchairs. Two artists will soon be dialog, Eyebeam fellow Mark Shepard and honorary resident Jordan Crandall. For many years, both artists have been engaged with problems of data and urbanism, an interest that has inflected their respective works at Eyebeam. Mark and Jordan have organized this evening’s dialogue to discuss the following prompt: What constitutes the urban today? Or, perhaps more precisely: how might we think about the constitution of the urban today? It is a conversation that has been incubating for several months in Eyebeam’s Urban Research Group.
