Benton-C Bainbridge: VHS Portraits
This installation coincides with Gimme More: Is Augmented Reality the Next Medium?
From February 19 to March 2, Eyebeam alumnus Benton-C will make painterly video portraiture of incoming Eyebeam Bookstore visitors using old-school video gear. Sitters will be altered using hacked wedding video mixers and TiVos that have been wired together, lit by video projection. Past results of Benton-C’s project have been compared to the Andy Warhol film portraits in Chelsea Girls. The analog portraits are recorded straight to VHS T-5 tapes. As each T-5 is filled, it’s added to a stack of tapes that anyone can pop into a VCR to play for the duration of the exhibition.
Portraits for sale
Individual portraits will be on sale as one-of-a-kind art objects, which bookstore visitors can buy or donate to Eyebeam for others to purchase.
