Chelsea non-profit organizations Printed Matter, Eyebeam, Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), and Family Business announce the first edition of a new annual artists’ music festival: Chelsea Sound. Organized jointly by the four non-profits, Chelsea Sound will be a day-long event devoted to music in contemporary art – artists who make work with sound and musicians who draw inspiration from art. Taking place in Chelsea’s Gallery District on Saturday, October 27th, the collaboratively-produced festival will include a series of performances, sound installations, and video screenings throughout the day across four venues. Performances are free and open to the public and will run between 2-9 PM.

With their varied missions and commitment to different media, each organization brings its own specific vantage point for looking at how artists and musicians fuel each other’s ideas and work.

Eyebeam will present a CeraSite stage, organized by NP, featuring works by EOE (Kari Altmann), Ryan Whittier Hale, Laura Brothers, Daniel Leyva, Daniel Swan and MSHR, with festival performances by MSHR, D Video, Mirror Mirror, Infierno Blanco, AJ Slim and special guests. NP’s CeraSite will act as a back-drop/stage for the performances at that location.

Printed Matter will present in store performances by Megafortress, Grasshopper, Tristan Shepherd, ESP Lab, and Eli Keszler, with a presentation of publications available from artists including LPs, VHS box sets, and artists’ books.

EAI will present a Sound Stage, a looping program of performance works by artists driven by music and artist videos that incorporate music performances. The screening program will include works by Cory Arcangel, Dara Birnbaum, Forcefield, Dan Graham, Kalup Linzy, Charlotte Moorman, Nam June Paik, Michael Smith, and Steina, among others.

Family Business presents Forest Rangers HQ with Brent Arnold, Alexandra Duvekot, Richard Webb & Baby Copperhead, a performance and exhibit exploring networks of communication in the vegetable and human kingdoms.

West-Chelsea’s non-profit institutions maintain a noncommercial space for artists in the heart of a rapidly transforming neighborhood. All four organizations are dedicated to supporting the emerging, experimental, DIY, whimsical, open source, electric, and occasionally the raucous. Chelsea Sound will fill this space with artists and musicians who are working at the overlapping boundaries of art and music – through innovative use of video and film, music publications, or the creative misuse of technology. On October 27th, the four groups will open their doors to an immersive soundscape.

Chelsea Sound is free and open to the public.
