For our inaugural Eyebeam Assembly, current resident Stephanie Dinkins will be in conversation with Bina48, Bruce Duncan, and Latoya Peterson discuss what it means to be human in the (coming) age of digital consciousness.
We are entering a new technological epoch that will completely change the way we live, work, love, and remember (skeptics should recall the iPhone is only ten years old). Embodied artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually become widely available vehicles for portraiture, which leads to the possibility of the transfer and preservation of consciousness. It is imperative our AI doppelgangers be developed and coded to in ways that convincingly represent the rich diversity of stories, culture, and physicality of the human family.
In this conversation, the group aims to discuss embodied artificial intelligence (androids) as representation, community generated storytellers, and the animated transmitters of culture. Stephanie will look at the implications of artificial intelligence for society. She hopes to demystify AI and spread these ideas as a spark for more conversations to come.
 
 

 
Stephanie Dinkins is an artist interested in creating platforms for ongoing dialog about artificial intelligence as it intersects race, gender, aging and our future histories. She is particularly driven to work with communities of color to develop deep-rooted AI literacy and co-create more culturally inclusive equitable artificial intelligence. Her artwork is exhibited internationally at a broad spectrum of community, private and institutional venues – by design. She is a current Eyebeam Resident.
 
Bina48 is one of the world’s most advanced social robots. She was commissioned by Dr. Martine Rothblatt and created by Hanson Robotics Inc. based on the information about a real person, Bina Aspen, co-founder of the Terasem Movement and the World Against Racism Museum. Using video interview transcripts, laser scanning life mask technology, face recognition, artificial intelligence, and voice recognition technology, Bina48 is designed to be a social being that represents a mix of memories, values, and beliefs from the original Bina along with new experiences gained through interaction with others.
 
Bruce Duncan, M.Ed., is Managing Director of the Terasem Movement Foundation Inc. and project leader for the LifeNaut Project, which is the brainchild of Dr. Martine Rothblatt. As the Principle Investigator of the LifeNaut Project, Bruce is responsible for the ongoing development of Bina48, the world’s first advanced humanoid robot based on the “mindfile” information of a real person. Among other things, he also curated the first cyber museum dedicated to addressing racism, bigotry, and prejudice at the World Against Racism Museum.
Latoya Peterson lives at the intersection of emerging technology, video games, television, and music.
Named one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 rising stars in media, she is best known for the award winning blog Racialicious.com – the intersection of race and pop culture. She is currently the Deputy Editor, Digital Innovation for ESPN’s The Undefeated. In 2016, she produced a critically acclaimed YouTube series on Girl Gamers. Previously, she was an Editor-at-Large at Fusion, and the Senior Digital Producer for The Stream, a social media driven news show on Al Jazeera America.
Currently, she is working on projects involving virtual/augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. In 2018, she is launching a collaborative art project that explores the future of artificial intelligence and predictive policing through a hip-hop lens.
