Performance: BELLA GAIA

May 15, 2012 & May 16, 2012

“BELLA GAIA is just beautiful. It really felt like I was back in space.”- Piers Sellers, NASA Astronaut, Spacewalker (STS-112 Atlantis, STS 121 Discovery)
Eyebeam Art & Technology Center is pleased to bring you, BELLA GAIA, a ‘Living Atlas’ journey of our world, expressing the deeply moving beauty of planet Earth as seen through the eyes of astronauts. Created by award winning director and classically trained violinist Kenji Williams, in collaboration with NASA, BELLA GAIA features an 80-minute live performance by Kenji and world class musicians against a large-screen backdrop of orbiting visualizations of Earth from space.
From fires in the Amazon basin to time-lapse images of arctic ice melt, stunning orbital imagery – rendered by SCISS’ Uniview using data from NASA– provides an exquisite simulation of the astronaut’s view from space. The performance also includes earthbound visitations from exotic Japanese temples to Egyptian pyramids.

The BELLA GAIA Ensemble features live: Deep Singh (Tabla, Voice, Percussion), Yumi Kurosawa (Koto), Lety Ellaggar (Nay, Sax), Kristin Hoffmann (Voice, Keys), Irina Akulenko (Dance), Lale Sayoko (Dance), Kenji Williams (Violin, Laptop), Kaeshi Chai (Dance)
