UNTETHERED Opening Reception

Join Untethered curator and Eyebeam curatorial fellow Sarah Cook for the opening of the show and a chance to meet the artists of Untethered. A guided tour of the exhibition will follow talks by the artists listed below.

Michel de Broin, an internationally recognized artist from Montreal who is based in Berlin, and winner of the 2007 Sobey Art Award, will present his recent sculptures, including Dead Star (2008) and Great Encounter (2008), an investigation into the isolation of appliances. www.micheldebroin.org

Kelly Dobson, an artist based at MITʼs Media Lab, will present her responsive hacked technologies including Blendie (2003–04), a blender that responds only to growling noises, and Toastie (2004), a toaster that operates when hummed at. http://web.media.mit.edu/~monster/

Germaine Koh, an internationally recognized artist from Vancouver, will present a work from her Fair Weather Forces series (2008), in which live tide and water-level data control a velvet rope barrier in the gallery. www.germainekoh.com

Sascha Pohflepp, a German artist and student in the Design Interactions program at the Royal College of Art, London, will presents his project Buttons (2006)—a lens-free camera that takes other people’s pictures.www.pohflepp.com

Including Eyebeam fellows Jessica Banks and Ayah Bdeir, lawyer Elizabeth Stark, founder of Harvardʼs Free Culture group, and researcher for Jonathan Zittrainʼs book The Future of The Internet, and Michael Sheafe, founder of Toaster Central, the New York repair shop for vintage and collectible kitchen appliances from the Golden Age of chrome and bakelite.
