Rodan Tekle is a video editor and digital artist/designer living and working in NYC via Sweden/Eritrea/Sudan. She is also the Co-founder of the digital motion studio STUDIO JUNBI. Before earning her MFA in the field of digital art she worked several years, in Stockholm – in the professional world of theater and opera. In her ongoing research work she is mainly interested in exploring the cinematic and documentary themes and possibilities associated with the daily encountered, lived within a screen environment – looking to understand and visualize the blur between the physical and the virtual, specifically from a woman-centric African diasporic lens.
What do you plan to do during Phase 1 of Rapid Response?
My project revolves around a digital Insurrectionary mutual aid community financing idea, as I’m Interested in seeing what more innovative infrastructure for redistribution and reparations, would look like. During Phase 1, I plan to develop my idea by dedicating more thought and research into alternative money organizing models – I plan on sharing my studies with some amazing black thinkers in my community, for feedback and further discussion. I plan by the end of phase 1, to have created a manifesto and inspiring model guide for a prototype of something that is meant to be open-source, dynamic and forever growing.
How does your work relate to the theme of the open call?
My work relates in the way that it is innovative community and equity building in direct response to our current heightened health, financial and social justice crisis. I believe that through smart and new use of technology, and through joint efforts, we the people can protect and care for ourselves at a way higher rate.
What does the future look like to you?
A real and major movement for serious structural change has begun and will continue. The mass focus will shift from mindless participation in consumerist capitalist culture, into the conscious hard work of dismantling and abolishing harmful and unjust systems, with the goal to build something new, humane and sustainable. In astrology, 2020 is one of the most significant, life-changing years in human history. We are coming to the end of several very long cycles and opening up to the dawning of a brand new chapter for humanity. This coming decade will be a deeply transformative one!
What is your grounding ethos?
That we have the power to shape our own future.
